“The primary reason for casting lots was to render an impartial, unbiased decision on important matters. Once the lot was cast, no one could argue that the decision was the result of human intervention like nepotism, politics, favouritism, and so on. The ancient practice of casting lots would be the same as throwing dice or flipping a coin we commonly use today.”
How remarkable to know that even the casual action of casting lots/dice is determined by God.
The mention of God’s sovereignty is met with various responses – raised eyebrows in reluctance, raised fists in grievance or raised hands in reverence. I think many shy away from saying that God is sovereign and that nothing can surprise Him or occur outside His control, will, authority or power.
Why?
Because of all the horrid things that occur in our world.
But suffering does not diminish God’s supreme authority.
Suffering highlights our limitations and our inherent need for God. He doesn’t panic or turn away when ‘bad things’ happen and when a grand mess unfolds (personally or globally). No. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
Father, what a relief to know that YOU are in ultimate control of our lives. What comfort to know that NOTHING in this world is beyond Your view, understanding, foresight and dominion. Lord, I’m sorry for the times I forget or doubt Your sovereignty despite Your continual reminder and display of Your character and control. Lord when calamity threatens to deceive us, may Your words of truth sound loudly in our ears that Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is Yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and You are exalted as head above all. Expand our understanding please Father, to understand that Your power is far-reaching. Father I’m grateful that You are in charge. I’m relieved that nothing catches You off-guard.
Direct me as You wish Lord. Use my life, my all, as You please Father.
May Your sovereignty be revealed in my surrender and may Christ be exalted through it all.
