Ah, how apt.

Whenever I come across this verse, I find myself focusing on the words ‘keep your heart’ / ‘guard your heart’, oftentimes ignoring the importance of the attached words ‘with all diligence’ / ‘above all else’. We’re advised to be persistent and cautious in what/who we allow to take residence in our heart. For just as our physical heart pumps blood to the rest of our body, the condition of our spiritual heart affects every aspect of our life.

What/who are we hosting in the expanse of our heart? How does it influence the way we speak, the choices we make, our moods and how we spend our time?

Lord, I ask for discernment to identify those things that capture our hearts and minds, causing us to be unproductive, bitter, anxious, angry, hopeless, selfish, rebellious, unforgiving and distressed. We lay these emotions, situations, thoughts and relationships at Your feet and surrender our hearts to You, our King. Father, I know I don’t have the strength to guard my heart on my own so I ask that You will reign and preserve my heart.

Always and forever.

Be the Shepherd of my soul and the King of my Heart please.

Love You Lord.
